Englishman Simon Hawkesley (Maverick Global) has done an utterly successful restoration of his Marrakech Medina Riad, his architectural concepts, design & build subtly resonate throughout Riad Laksiba. Blending creams and beige, terracotta, cedar wood, plaster effects (tadelakt) all of which sympathetically harmonise without attempting a bold-statement. “Old Palace”, style, is a tall order for any designer and very hard to achieve, or atleast, pass-off as authentic. e-mail Simon directly here.
(horse drawn carriages) to serve tourists. Street life in Derb Kadi consists of children playing and locals going about their day to day lives. The street, in itself, offers a fascinating insight into Moroccan life; all neighbours are very welcoming and enjoy interaction with Riad Laksiba and its guests. Check availability here.
Located in the Royal Kasbah district of the Medina (the first Citadel of the Sultans of Morocco) and very easy to find; one would struggle to rival its location.
Simon explains: “A Marrakech location choice is always going to be a compromise. If you locate close to the main square (Jemaa el Fna) then it’s constant pulse, especially at night, may well become tiresome. A location within the Souks then you may struggle to find your way within the labyrinth, find it somewhat intimidating after dark and taxis may not be able to drop you to the door. I took all of these considerations on-board when house hunting and buying my house in Marrakesh. The Kasbah quartier was the most expensive, per square meter, but did offer wide streets, good street lighting, easy parking & vehicle access. Moreover as we are surrounded by Royal Palaces, including the current monarchs, Mohammed VI, and Royal Gardens; the level of security in the Kasbah is better than the rest of the Medina and the state investment in the Kasbah’s continual renovation initiatives, currently: Kasbah Mosque & Saadian Tombs area & the public gardens opposite Riad Laksiba’s medina entrance Bab Ksiba totally justified this extra spend. If it gives me confidence then it will do the same for my family, friends and guests”.
